New Venue for Trade Show
After a two year hiatus from the Queen Mary property in Long Beach, the Apartment Association will return on September 20th for the 39th Annual Expo.
HOWEVER, THE LOCATION WILL NOT BE ON THE SHIP.
The show will locate in the geodesic dome adjacent to the ship. The dome previously housed the Howard Hughes Spruce Goose but is now a venue for special event, as well as the passenger terminal for the Carnival Cruise line. On the interior, the dome is bisected to accommodate both uses.
The Dome is easily accessible to the 5 story parking structure and the floor of the Dome is level, allowing all booths and both seminar rooms to locate on the same floor.
At 130 feet high and 415 feet wide, the Dome is the world's largest, free-span aluminum geodesic structure. It was completed in 1982 at a total floor space of 135,300 square feet. The Queen Mary, in comparison, is three football fields long (900 feet).
The geodesic dome was invented in the 1940's by an American engineer named Buckminster Fuller.
The geodesic dome consists of dividing a sphere into equal triangles so that the surface structure of a dome could be more easily made. The similarity of the triangles makes the domes easier to construct and makes it structurally strong. The overall strength is distributed evenly. Fuller insisted upon the minimal use of materials. Therefore the construction of the domes make them lightweight, transportable and easily assembled.
