Dear Maintenance Men:
I have been looking for a company to refinish my stovetops & other appliances. I used to use a local outfit to upgrade or change the color. But these vendors seem to have disappeared. I am wondering if they have outlawed the process due to environmental issues. What do you suggest we do about refinishing appliances or do we just buy new ones when the color gets outdated?
Terry
Dear Terry:
You’re correct. It is now very hard to get an appliance refinished because of environmental concerns. For your general appliances such as refrigerators, washer and dryers etc. powder coating is an option and available almost anywhere. The stovetop is another story. Standard powder coating will not hold up to the heat of cooking. The best method is to strip the porcelain finish and reapply a new porcelain finish. This must be done at a shop that specializes in the process.
